Identifying why the VPS stopped responding

8th February, 2010 - Posted by admin -

Hello All,

My VPS is hosted at one of the "good guys" recommended here frequently. This morning, I received an email that they had to reboot the host server and my VPS will be up again in few minutes. I started monitoring it, and eventually it was up ater about 20 minutes.

Now after about 6-7 hours, it stopped responding again. So I called them, and they said host server looks good, but my VPS was not responding. The admin issues some restart commands… and then finally hard-booted the VPS instance. It took a long time for it to boot.

Now, where can I go to see the logs to find out what went wrong? The admin on phone suggested that there may be too many logs to look at, and he could not find anything obvious. I have lots of time to look at the logs, so, can someone point me where to start looking?

It’s a Linux VPS running on Virtuazzo (i guess). Both cpanel and ssh were not responding, but after the reboot, the admin did see the "restart requests" in the log. None of my sites were responding on http.

Thanks in advance…
